LEAMINGTON — The Ontario government is investing $41 million to enhance wastewater treatment services in Leamington, protecting thousands of acres of greenhouse operations and supporting domestic food production in one of North America’s largest greenhouse hubs.
“This investment is a clear example of our government’s plan to protect Ontario’s economy by supporting the people and sectors that drive it,” said Trevor Jones, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, and MPP for Chatham-Kent–Leamington. “By funding critical infrastructure like Leamington wastewater projects, we’re strengthening local economies, safeguarding food security, and making sure Ontario farmers have the tools they need to grow, compete, and succeed now and for the future.”
The project will improve wastewater management in Leamington by collecting and treating nutrient-heavy greenhouse wastewater. This will protect local water quality, improve sustainability, and create conditions for future growth and expansion in the greenhouse industry.
The Leamington project is part of Ontario’s broader Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), a $2.3 billion provincial initiative that supports water, wastewater, and servicing projects across Ontario. To date, MHIP investments are enabling the building of approximately 800,000 new homes, while also supporting rural economies and key industries.

· The Leamington project will enhance wastewater treatment capacity, enabling greenhouse growers to recycle and reuse up to 90 percent of process water, reducing costs and conserving resources.
· MHIP currently consists of four funding streams: the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF), Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) Stream, Health and Safety Water Stream (HSWS), and the Agriculture and Irrigation Stream.
