Chatham–Kent–Leamington MPP Trevor Jones explores new school, St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School in Chatham

Chatham–Kent–Leamington MPP Trevor Jones joined Director of Education Scott Johnson and Superintendent Lisa Demers to tour the new St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School, which is in the final stages of construction on Tweedsmuir Avenue, W. in Chatham.

“This is the future of our community,” says MPP Trevor Jones. “Our community schools are hubs and the communities build out from those hubs. And this is going to be a pillar of hope and opportunity to move our next generation to where we have to be. The future of Ontario is in our schools.”

MPP Jones praised the Board’s senior administration and the committee of students, staff, parents and community partners who collaborated with the architects on the state-of-the-art design, featuring collaborative learning spaces, a two-storey learning commons, community room and double-sized gym, all set on an eight-acre site. It was MPP Jones’ first visit to the school since the ground-breaking and blessing ceremony, which was held in September 2022.

“I just want to thank our Director of Education Scott Johnson and his amazing team, from the design people to the contractors that are working on the site. Thank you for bringing this to life,” says MPP Jones.

“I want to say a special word of thanks to Mr. Jones and to the Ontario government for their tremendous support,” says Scott Johnson, Director of Education. “This new school, along with the new St. Angela Merici and the fully refurbished Monsignor Uyen Catholic French Immersion school are the future of Catholic education in Chatham.”

Construction of the new St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School will be completed by the end of March 2024. The 564-pupil place school will also include a daycare with 49 childcare spaces. The move-in of furniture, equipment and technology will take place during spring and through the summer.

In September of 2024, the school will be opened to students and staff of the current Georges P. Vanier and St. Ursula Catholic schools, which also includes students from the former St. Joseph Catholic School in Chatham.
